The Magical Sol-fa Ruler for the Piano

This isn’t just another set of A-B-C stickers slapped onto a piano keyboard. This isn’t A-B-C at all. This is Sol-Fa. A-B-C’s are fixed, but Sol-Fa can move. It moves along with the "key" of the song so that the home note (tonic) is always doh for a major key or la for a minor. This concept of movable doh has been advocated by Zoltán Kodály and widely adopted in music education and vocal music. People have shown this idea in staff notation and keyboard charts for centuries, but they could never make the Sol-Fa show directly on the piano keys, because they couldn’t let you move the labels freely along the keyboard, while keeping all the notes correctly shown. But now, you can do it all with the Sol-Fa Ruler.

To create this, I worked out the average spacing between semitones and whole tones across the keyboard, and laid them out just as an ordinary ruler marks centimetres and inches, something no one had ever imagined before. That clever spacing finally makes Sol-Fa truly movable on the keyboard.

And now, to navigate among major and minor keys on the keyboard, sit the ruler at the back of the keyboard. Slide it left or right until doh lines up with any white or black key, and instantly the matching notes appear: d, r, m, f, s, and so on. For a minor key, just match la instead. Want a new key? Slide again, and you’re there. From the straightforward C major to the notoriously tricky E♭ minor, everything is covered.

When you’re trying to play any tune in Sol-Fa on the keyboard, this little helper makes it click. Transposing a tune becomes easier (and a lot more fun) when you think in Sol-Fa with this ruler. Whether you’re sketching melodies, adapting them for voices or instruments, writing songs, or practising scales, the process suddenly feels natural and clear.

We’ve shared it with beginner players, and the reaction is always the same: “Wow, this just makes sense!” It helps scales stick, sharpens your ear, and turns exploring new keys into an adventure instead of a headache.

And because every invention deserves a backstory, we’ve kept the original demo video. It’s vintage, rough around the edges, and the audio’s a bit crunchy, but we left it that way to capture the exact moment this invention first came alive.
